Embracing Geomancy: Sonic Geology and the Ancient Sciences of the East

NOTES Compiled by Roger Millington, NISG

Previous NISG investigations (see: Barrows, S. & Millington, R: Sounding Space Analysis #012: Wardrobe Museum Garden, Salisbury) have challenged the validity of notions of Earth Energy or Geomancy within the emerging empirical science of Sonic Geology.

Repeated, and sometimes heated, committee sessions have questioned the degree to which the NISG should associate itself with British geomantic factions in the field, given, as they are, to non-scientific notions of mystery spirituality and the arcane, such as ley lines, druidic and astrological phenomenologies of landscape.

However, science must not stand still! Minds, after all, are like parachutes, and only work when open

The great Taoist teacher Lao Tzu reminds us: the quieter you become, the more able you are to hear. Recent communications with our dedicated colleagues in Seoul, South Korea, have alerted us to the existence of Pungsu, a Taoist geomantic tradition in East Asian culture that dates back thousands of years. Pungsu offers us a fascinating language for the interpretation and detection of subterranean sonic phenomena in the city.

As Rodney Grapes and Gyeong-Nan Jeong (Beneath our Feet: Geology and Landscape of Seoul) discuss, the hilly and river-dominated landscape of Seoul met all the Taoist requirements of geomantic harmony when King Taejo decided to establish his capital there in 1394.

Just as Taoism encourages us to listen to nature in order to find unity and flow, P'ungsu regards the land as an organic circulatory system full of hidden forces that can be tapped in order to create harmonious living conditions; linking past and present and respecting nature, tradition and ancestry.

Kim Kwi-Gon and Kim Kweesoon (Sustainable Cities and Korean Ecological Traditions, 2000) also explain that, according to the geomantic science of Korean P'ungsu, the ideal location for King Taejos capital city was that it should have high, rugged mountains to the north, low, rolling hills to the east and west, a low hill to the south, and a wide flood plain through which a major river flowed.

Orientation of the city of Seoul to these geological features and to Taoist astronomical constellations such as the black tortoise to the north, the vermilion bird to the south, the blue dragon to the east, and the white tiger to the west, could mean that the very urban design of Seoul itself is conducive to the detection of hidden forces of sonic geology, and to regular and sustained experiences of sonic eruption.

P'ungsu also incorporates the ancient science of placing dwellings in such a way that their structures are in harmony with the hidden forces of the earth. This perhaps explains why Seoul residents experience such sustained and remarkable incidences of sonic eruption.
The awareness and practices of P'ungsu have many parallels with the new scientific paradigms of Sonic Geology, which emphasize a holistic and systemic approach. As knowledge and methodology improve, it might therefore be expected that it will become more and more feasible to integrate the P'ungsu perspective into NISG fieldwork.
Not only might applying our Korean colleagues deep understanding of the hidden forces within the earth and the principles of P'ungsu help us to improve our environmental understanding and decision-making in fieldwork, but P'ungsu approaches could also be influential in educating the general public at large and developing the scientific methods of Sonic Geology interest groups worldwide.

Established on a porous sonic reservoir dating back thousands of years, by a people attuned to the hidden vibrations of nature, and designed through the organizing principles of Pungsu, Seoul could well be described as the perfect Sonic City, with Oil Tank Culture Park one of its most active areas for sonic eruption. All we have to do is listen

GEOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Returning to the rocks and bolts of geological formation may seem mundane after the heady effects of considering Sonic Geology as a hidden force within Taoist notions of the flow of the universe, but it is to this that we must return if we are to truly blend the symbiotic understandings of Eastern and Western science and philosophy.

The underlying rocks that form the hills that enclose present-day Seoul are composed of two main rock types, granite and gneiss. The low lying land beside the rivers and streams consists of alluvium (riverdeposited sediment).
Gneiss is a metamorphic rock that has been changed through recrystallization by heat and pressure at depth within the Earths crust. These rocks are 2500 to 1800 million years old and represent the oldest rock in Korea. The granite is a mere youngster in comparison at around 161 million years old. It is well known that these metamorphic rocks are highly sensitive to crystalline induction, acting as mini radio sets for the transmission of proto-historic sonic phenomena.

Exposed Gneiss is also susceptible to freeze-thaw cycles leading to weathering and fragmentation and to landsliding during times of heavy rain or as a result of penetration by the roots of trees. Disruption of the rock in this manner may also release sound that has been held within the complex crystal matrix of the stone.
In the valleys of Seoul, and particularly along the Han River, the granite and gneiss basement rocks are covered by alluvium, which consists of loose sediment such as mud, silt, sand and gravel deposited from ancient rivers about 1.8 million years ago. Alluvial geology is famously porous to sound, and particularly useful for the detection of echo-type phenomena.

Another sediment being deposited on Seoul today is airborne dust derived from central China, Mongolia and Siberia, where strong surface winds pick up mineral particles and uplift them to heights of between 1500 to 2000 meters. The yellow dust storms of the Seoul spring are also mixed with particles of iron oxide, which may form a magnetized, conductive layer on the surface of the earth which attracts signals from the crystalline rocks below.
Seoul also sometimes experiences rather small or low magnitude earthquakes. These are not powerful enough to cause much damage and the great majority are not even felt, but seismic activity is fundamental to the science of Sonic Geology, with the potential to unlock decades worth of sound, even at low levels.
With a current population of near 10.5 million, many of the original landscape features within the central part of Seoul have undergone centuries of modification, and especially so during the 1960s during a time of rapid urbanization. Of the symbolic and historically important hills in downtown Seoul, three - Mt. Bugak (342 m), Mt. Inwang (338 m) and Mt. Nam (262 m) have been preserved from denudation, while the fourth and lowest, Mt. Nak (111 m), is now covered by buildings. As Dr Stella Barrows famously observed in her 1984 paper Auf Wiederhören Pet: Exploring Sonic Geology on German Building Sites: foundations always lead to emanations!

Oil Tank Culture Park itself has undergone a major reconstruction as part of Seouls urban renewal programme, and there is some speculation that contamination of the land during the 17 years that it was sealed off and condemned as a toxic area may also have led to chemical reactions below ground that have stimulated sonic activity.

Oil Tank Culture Park

MAPO-GU HISTORICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The name "Mapo" comes from the name of an old ferry across the Han River, and can roughly be translated as "hemp ferry."

During the Joseon Dynasty, the city gates of Seoul were opened and closed each day, accompanied by the ringing of large bells.

Settlement of the Han River area, where present-day Seoul is located, began around 4000 BC. In Dorset, UK (the location where we have discovered the most forceful sonic emanations to date), significant human settlement took place during this same time period. It's not inconceivable to think that this was a particularly fertile time for 'sonic seeding'.
